The Difference Between RELIGION and CHRISTIANITY

I know I’m late with watching this YouTube video: “Why I Hate Religion But Love Jesus,” But I’m not big on opening email links while I’m at work for obvious reasons. But a co-worker kept asking if I watched it? So I forward it to my personal email last Thursday and watch it at home. After watching this video all I could say is “This kid speaks the truth!” There is a HUGE difference between religion and Christianity and especially Jesus. No matter how you try and spin it. Jesus is the only way to heaven, no matter how hard you try to be good. Jesus already paid the price for our sins. Christianity is having a personal relationship with Christ, not following a set of rules. I am a Christian, but I refuse to say I am religious because I am not and will never be! Religion follows the church and pastor’s rule, and in some not ALL church might not always be biblical. Christianity follows the bible, god’s words! Religion is man-made, Christianity is God made.

Most people would consider Evangelicals (aka “born-again” Christians) to be very religious.  Indeed, the conservative political “arm” of Evangelicalism is commonly called the Religious Right.  Yet, ironically, Evangelicals themselves often deny that they practice a “religion”!

You see, they define religion as: “a burdensome yoke of man-made rules and dead rituals; a futile attempt to please God and save oneself by good works”.  So they insist that Christianity is not a religion but a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.  This “religion -vs- relationship” dichotomy is quite common in Evangelical circles, but is it legitimate?  Is Christianity a religion or a relationship?

There is a great difference between CHURCHIANITY and CHRISTIANITY. Many are GOING TO CHURCH but few are GOING DOWN THE ROAD WHICH LEADS TO LIFE (Matthew 7:13-14). Many name the Name of Christ (2 Timothy 2:19) and claim to be Christians but few understand what a Christian really is. Many are RELIGIOUS but few are RIGHT WITH GOD. May God help us to understand the difference between RELIGION and true CHRISTIANITY as set forth in the Word of God, the Holy Bible.

What’s the difference between Christianity and Religion? Christianity = Christ Likeness

The tragedy of Christianity is that it has been turned into a religion. It is not! All religions say “do”…Christianity says “done”. All religions set up rules whereby one makes himself “worthy”. Christianity says we are “made” worthy by Christ’s sacrifice for us. There is nothing we have to do, indeed there is nothing we “can” do but accept God’s amazing grace. If we’ll stop trying to change ourselves by willpower and phoniness, God’s Spirit will change us if we will trust Him. Christianity is literally a possession. A possession of The Holy Spirit, like Paul said “We’ll “find” ourselves doing the things that please God.” God is not interested in spiritual imitation which is what religion is…he is interested in spiritual fruition… Modern day religious Pharisees are still stumbling over that, listen to their reaction… as Jesus said “blind guides” some things do not change over 2000 years

The saddest part of people’s beliefs today is the one where they believe Christianity is a Religion. Way out. Never! Two of the leaders of the Gospel; Billy Graham once stated that if there ever was a country that would go to hell because of their religion it would be the United States of America. Why would a man who loves God before everything else make a statement like that? T. D. Jakes said “church is a gateway, and it is a catalyst, but I implore you to not take the divisive words of a few and depict the thoughts, hearts and motives of many. Jesus is the reflection of the joy and peace that God has promised to all of His children who follow Him.”

There are many religions out there but only one Christianity. To be a Christian is to be the splitting image or twin of Christ. You have to imitate Him to the maximum.  Not an easy task as He was perfect and we are striving to perfection. He was and is still perfect. Who created Christianity? Paul or Jesus Christ? Jesus Christ, or God in the flesh, created Christianity, Paul perfected it.

Can a Catholic, Baptist, Methodist, Presbyterian or Brethren be a Christian? Yes they can. As all their religions follow the Triune Godhead and the teachings thereof. The Catholics follow the Pope for their teachings and religion but Christ as their way of life. The Methodists would then follow John Wesley for their religious teachings, but still Christ as a way of life. So then how can religion and Christianity be the same, or Christianity be a religion?

Mt 28:19
Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: (a) 19.(a). Teach or, make disciples, or, Christians of all nations

Acts 11:20 And when he had found him, he brought him unto Antioch. And it came to pass, that a whole year they assembled themselves with the church, and taught much people. And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch.

Galatians 1:14 And profited in the Jews’ religion above many my equals in mine own nation, being more exceedingly zealous of the traditions of my fathers. (a) 14. a. equals: Gr. equals in years

James 1:26 If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man’s religion is vain.

Religion is Tradition – Christianity is a way of life. Religion was supposed to come to an end at the cross. However, due to mans’ inherent disobedience to God and not wanting to follow in His ways, Christianity isn’t easy, we still have religion today. Many Catholics still follow the heathen ways taught to them through the generations, but few speak Christ on their lips or even know He has saved them.

Many other religions mix their religious beliefs with politics. Daniels states we as Christians should stand up and be counted. We should constantly strive to seek God’s will. We should continuously pray to Him, giving Him praises and honor and glory. We should strive to be righteous. In doing this we are seen as perfect in God’s eyes. The angels rejoice with Him when sinners receive the Holy Spirit in their lives. They weep when a soul is lost to the fires.

There is constant bickering in Religion where there is only love amongst Christians. Just as the Muslims state that to be truly Muslim you must obey every law given in the Koran. God originally gave us Ten Commandments, but He reduced them to two. Thou shalt love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul and your entire mind, and the second is like unto it, thou shalt love your neighbor as yourself. All the rest of the commandments are built into only those two.

However, just as He gives you only two, He also states that should you break one the commandments you break them all. So how do we see Christianity and religion? Religion is a teaching and a tradition. Handed down through the generations. Christianity is a way of life given to us by the Lord Jesus Christ Himself. It’s a means to cleanse our thoughts and hearts. It’s a means to bring us to the feet of Christ. It’s a means to make requests that only our heavenly Father can answer.

It’s that warm fuzzy we experience when we know that our Lord and Savior is near to us, loves us and keeps us eternally safe. Christianity is not a religion, just as the church is not a building. Christianity is a way of life following Jesus’ teachings. The church is the people who practice those teachings. It is not sitting in church or following the laws set in the church that makes you a Christian. It is practicing Jesus’ teachings that make you a Christian.

I cannot believe how blind you people are, you are really not listening to his message. There are hypocrites in all religions, you listen but you do not do (Practice what you preach) if you don’t have the relationship with Jesus and follow the clear path he puts us on and seek Gods face and not the world we are doomed. You can have decals on your car or wear a shirt that says I love God and Jesus but if your heart is not right than you’re doing God an injustice. You have to learn how to separate from Gods words to the false Prophets. You have to be careful of the message your Pastor is teaching you, remember he is still a man and twist things around. Ask God in prayer in the name of Jesus to help you with that, Jesus has helped me countless times and I didn’t deserve it. He paid our sins at the cross but we just can’t keep asking him whenever we need something he’s our friend, father who deserves respect he wants you to constantly talk to him in private.

Jesus was speaking of a body of believers, and not four walls with steeples, when he was speaking of His Church. He was saying that with Peter and his other disciples; he would build up a body of believers who have a strong foundation, such as rock. People all too much confuse the meanings of religion and church. Judaism was the one true religion and all the rest of us were supposed to align with the word of God. This was also stated by Jesus when he proclaimed that he was not there to abolish the law. It was never intended for us to separate from that teaching and from other denominations. The Church comes straight from God as where religion is something of self-imposed teachings, rituals, and practices. We all should really take a moment to realize the difference between God’s laws and self-imposed laws. It is always best to get the Truth straight from the Bible. If it is not in there, then you are following someone else agenda.

James 1:27 put region in a positive light but Colossians 2 Paul said s religion is bad. RELIGION itself is a NEUTRAL word! You will have to interpret & understand the word for  yourself. For me:

~JESUS is my SAVIOR not my Religion~

Below is the interview of Jeff Bethke and CBS News faith and religion contributor Father Beck discuss the video.
